Pressing our luck!

Yesterday was a good day!  Lots of fun things happened that made me smile.

First, I got to volunteer in Lauren's class.  I always enjoy doing this.  It is a job that isn't a job.  Yes, I do work, yes I attempt to run around and get things done, yes I run into some mild frustrations... however, I also get to hang out with my daughter.  I get to know her classmates--which a few of them are hilarious!.  I get to witness a child, who at the beginning of the year, didn't know her letters, and now can read!  It is amazing to see their eyes light up when it all clicks and somethings makes sense.  I enjoy it more than I ever thought I would.  I look forward to it every week, and am greatly disappointed when I cannot attend.  And, I know Lauren loves having me there!  She comes out of the classroom spontaneously to hug me and give me a recognizing smile.  Really really cool.

Then I went to my friends house for lunch.  I brought us some sustenance, she provided the locale, and we chatted while the kids played.  She also has new baby kittens, so I got to cuddle with a couple of them too---I love cats, but a few in the household are very allergic---so no cats for us.

Upon coming home at 2ish, I put Julia down for a nap (which she actually took), Joshua played, and I got a little light snooze in.

Our lovely babysitter then came over.... God I love her, I wish she wasn't so busy having a life ;-)), and she watched the kids so my husband and I could go hang.
---We went to Starbucks and had drinks
---We went for a short drive
---We went to the casino for some entertainment, had a great dinner, and pulled out a little cash for some gambling.
It was a lucky night for both of us.  We started with 40.00 and walked out with 64.00.  Free entertainment for 2 hrs, can't ask for much more than that!  And, just laughing and giggling with my man was pretty priceless as well. :-)

Then we realized we needed to head home, so earlier mentioned babysitter could be dismissed.  It was 745pm.  Along the way, my husband mentioned we needed gas.  I didn't want to stop, and mentioned we can just get it when we got back into our town, or he could tomorrow.  The tank reading was like 30 miles.  We had enough! :-)  Neither of us wanted to stop our fun evening for gas.  So we drove.  We drove up a big hill----- and the truck stopped accelerating.  Swearing ensued--which I first thought was a cop getting us, looked around and saw nothing.  Then Chris pulled over and into a rental office driveway, where we made it far enough in to block the entire entrance, and DONE.  Truck done.  We ran out of gas.  Neither of us have ever done this.... I had to laugh hysterically.  Really? Out of gas?

---So, when I was done laughing, I called my friend.  She will save us, she always saves me..... except in celebration of her daughter actually living to her 5th birthday (her daughter is a little stressful at times! :-)), she celebrated with wine.  Lots of wine.  So, she was out.
---We have 24 hour emergency service with our insurance.  We pay for it, why not use it?  So we called, and they dispatched... with arrival time supposed to be at 8:19.  At 820, we get a call from the dude who didn't know where he was going, and was on the other side of the city.  But he assured us (and you had to hear his goofy voice) "I got you premium gas, and I will take care of you!"  So we waited.... waited.... .waited.... 840pm, he shows up.  He gives us a sob story about how they dispatched the wrong person, we were out of his district, but "I will take care of you, I am independent, and I am a respectable family man, I will take care of you".  So, out of the back of his truck he pulls out this minuscule can of gas.  Remember, we have a huge SUV... on an incline.  1 gallon of gas (which they are required to bring 3 as per the insurance people), will not do shit.  And it didn't.
---Now, we are 1/2 a mile from a gas station.  How hard could it be for him to run up the hill, get the gas and come back?  (It is a busy street, not walker friendly or we would have done it)..... Well, he "Got a call to change a flat on the way here, and I have to take care of that or I will lose my contract.  So, I have to go.... but I will come back if you call the insurance and request another service"... What?  Really?  You are leaving us here?  We gave him $20.00 to pay for the gas, and he took it, gave us a gallon which didn't do shit, and left us there.  Then, just to add insult to injury... in order for him to turn around to go the right way, he had to go up the hill, and turn around in an intersection with at least 2 gas stations.  Then back down the hill, and past us.
---So, Chris calls the emergency service back.  They dispatch another company, but they are going to take an hour..... And as we are on the phone my drunk friend calls back and says "I thought you were going to text me when you got home...." I was like, I will.  So, after realizing we were still stuck, she sent her rescue team (aka her husband "D", who had just gotten off work) to save us!  (Thank you D) and he came speeding to us with an appropriate amount of gas--5 gallons, and we were finally on our way.
---We finally got home at 1005pm.... mind you, we were a mile, at most, from home the whole time.

Chris is mortified at the fact that he actually ran out of gas.  I take the blame though, I was the one that discouraged him from filling up........ PLUS, it makes for great memories that we can laugh about.  "Dude, remember that time we ran out of gas and that Goober came to save us, but didn't?"

So, we had a great evening, won money at the casino, and then spent more than that to save us from our stranded situation....... :-)
